Messi is on the verge of eclipsing Romario’s goal records

Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, is on the verge of shattering Brazil star Romario’s FIFA-recognized goal record.

After scoring five goals in Argentina’s 5-0 win over Estonia in an international friendly match on Sunday, Messi is now only three goals behind Romario.

The PSG forward is currently ranked fourth among the top ten highest goal scorers of all time, while Romario is ranked third.

So far in his career, the Barcelona icon has 769 goals in 974 games for both club and nation, while Romario has 772 goals in 994 games for both club and country (1985-2007).

However, Manchester United and Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored two goals in a 4-0 win for Portugal over Switzerland at the weekend, is in first place with 815 goals, while former Austrian international Josef Bican is in second place with 805 goals in over 530 appearances (1931-1956).
